Learn how to use The New York Times News app to enjoy the high-quality journalism of The New York Times on your iOS device.
The New York Times News app is free to download and install in the App Store. For unlimited access to all journalism and features, you can purchase an All Access subscription. For more information, visit Digital Subscriptions.

Navigate the iOS News App
You can navigate between the different tabs located at the bottom of the app.
Home
Read the latest news stories, navigate through Sections, or search for articles or Audio archives using the magnifying glass icon in the upper right hand corner.
Listen
Across the top of the Listen tab, find a carousel of shows to listen to. Shows are ordered based on the most recent episode’s release. Select a show to find more information and episodes.
Below the show carousel are snippets of audio journalism, which can be scrolled through by swiping right or left.
Control episodes in progress using the floating Audio button (small oval that holds the cover image of the current show playing with a play/pause button).
- The Audio button will follow you as you navigate throughout the app, allowing you to quickly pause or play the episode as needed
- Select the the Audio button to expand to full screen, and see additional audio controls
Play
Play your favorite New York Times Games under the Play tab. For more information about Games, including how to play, review our Games section in the Help Center.
You
The You tab is a dedicated, personalized space in the mobile app that tracks what matters most:
- Your Interests
- History
- Saved Articles
- Settings (gear icon in top right corner)
Your Interests in the You tab is customizable in a few ways.
- Add interests by selecting the + at the top of the You tab and choosing interests from a library.
- Remove or rearrange interests by selecting the three dots at the top of an interest.
- Your Interests automatically adds topics of interest based on the articles you read. You will see a tooltip alerting you when a new interest has been added.
Save, Share, or Comment on Articles
Save Articles
You can save any article by selecting the Save ribbon in the article toolbar.
To view your Saved list, select the You tab and navigate to Saved at the top of the tab. To remove an article from your Saved list, select the Save ribbon again.

Share Articles
You can share articles from the iOS News app. To share an article, select the Share (arrow) icon.
Subscribers can also gift articles to non-subscribers. To learn more review, Gift Articles for New York Times Subscribers.
You can see articles you’ve received from other New York Times readers in the Shared with You section by selecting the gear icon in the top right corner. Confirm Shared with You is enabled in your device’s settings in order to view this section.
Read or Leave Comments
You can read comments on most articles in the iOS News app. Select the Comment icon located in the navigation bar on the bottom of the screen to read all comments and leave your own.
News App Settings
Enable Notifications and Alerts
Notifications alert you to important and interesting news stories. To adjust your notification settings select the Settings icon on the top right of the You tab. From there, select Push Notifications Settings and toggle to select the specific notifications you’d like to receive.
Enable Dark Mode
Dark Mode allows you to change the display of the News app to a light-on-dark color scheme. Enabling Dark Mode on the app allows you to reduce the light emitted from your device and improve readability of the app. By default, the app follows the display settings enabled on your device. However, app users can change the display settings for the News app that override the device’s settings.
Note: While you can enable Dark Mode for most of the app, Dark Mode will not display in some sections of The New York Times app. We are constantly working to improve the app experience for our users and will continue to work to have Dark Mode available in other portions of the app where it may not currently be available.
To change the display settings for the News app, complete the following steps:
- Download the newest version of the News app from the App Store
- Select Display Settings from the Settings section of the You tab
- Select Automatic, Dark, or Light
Change Font Size
To change your font size in the News app, you can go to your iOS device’s accessibility settings to increase the font size on your device which will increase the font size in The New York Times app.

System Requirements and Refreshing the App
The New York Times regularly releases new versions of the mobile apps that provide enhanced functionality and issue fixes. Visit the App Store for operating system information.
The News app is automatically refreshed periodically over the course of the day. You can manually refresh the app by pulling down from the top of the screen.
App Removal
When a New York Times app is removed from sale from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or any other app store on the market, it means it is no longer supported, e.g. these apps will not receive new features, security fixes, or any other updates in the future.
Troubleshooting the iOS App
I purchased a subscription through Apple, but I’m being asked to subscribe— what should I do?
New York Times All Access subscriptions can be purchased through Apple. If you purchased your subscription through Apple, you can restore your access by verifying the subscription purchase on the device by following these steps:
- Navigate to the You tab
- Select the Settings icon on the top-right hand side of the page
- Select Restore Subscription
If the issue persists, please report the issue through the app following these steps:
- Navigate to the You tab
- Select the Settings icon on the top-right hand side of the page
- Select Report a bug and describe, in detail, the issue you are experiencing
- Select Submit
Change or Cancel iOS Subscriptions
If you purchase a New York Times All Access or News subscription through Apple, you can manage your subscription (i.e., change or cancel your subscription) through the App Store.
