Searching best practices

Search results are pulled from article headlines, the full text of an individual article, author field, date range, and index terms.

For best results, we recommend following these tips:

  • Use specific terms if you’re looking for specific results.
  • To find exact phrases in an article, use quotation marks around the phrase.
  • Use the filter options below the search bar to narrow down results (date range, section, type).
  • Sort your search results under the Sort by Relevance dropdown.

Searching for obituaries

Obituaries are easiest to search for in the Obituaries section, which can be found at nytimes.com/section/obituaries

  1. Below the Overlooked section, select Search
  2. Enter the name associated with the obituary and select enter/return on your keyboard. Results can be sorted by relevance, newest, or oldest.
