Articles Read by an Automated Voice

The New York Times offers the option to listen to the majority of our articles as soon as they’re published, enhancing accessibility and providing another way to engage with our journalism.

This feature uses an automated voice, which may result in occasional errors in pronunciation, tone, or sentiment.

Listen Using Automated Voice

Listening to articles differs slightly between a web browser, The New York Times app and the New York Times Audio app. 

Web Browser and The New York Times App

Open the article you wish to listen to and select the Play button located at the top of the page. Audio will continue to play while you navigate apps or other browser windows.

To dismiss the audio within the app when listening to an article:

  1. Select the control button in the bottom right corner of your screen
  2. Select the three dots in the top right corner and select Dismiss Audio

The New York Times Audio App

Discover a selection of articles read by an automated voice by selecting the Today tab and navigating to the Today’s Stories section. You can also search for individual articles in the Discover tab. Audio will continue to play while you navigate the app or lock your screen.
