Metric Conversion

Learn more about recipes converted to metric measurements, including how to use this option and where to find it on New York Times Cooking recipes.

New York Times Cooking now offers the option to see ingredient measurements in metric units (grams and liters), providing a way for home cooks who don’t use our current standard (a.k.a. imperial) system of measurements (cups and ounces) to prepare our recipes. Tablespoons and teaspoons were not converted to metric because those kitchen tools are ideal for measuring small quantities of ingredients. Please note that standard U.S. tablespoons and teaspoons are slightly smaller than those in other countries.

The metric measurements are automatically converted, which may result in occasional errors in ingredient quantities.

How to Use the Metric Conversion Feature

The Metric Conversion feature is currently only available on the Cooking app.

To change the measurement units of a recipe, select the Measurement icon in the top right corner of the Ingredients.

Here, you can choose between measurements showing in Standard U.S. or Metric Units. Your selection will be reflected on all recipes across the Cooking app.

Note: A Beta feature is released to help us learn whether our customers are interested in the feature and what improvements should be made before it becomes permanent.

Metric will be displayed next to the ruler icon when viewing a recipe’s ingredients in Metric Units:

Share Feedback on Metric Conversion

If the converted measurements cause an issue with a recipe, select “Send us feedback about the metric conversion on this recipe” from any recipe to let us know what went wrong.
