About Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee is a word game that challenges players to construct as many words as they can using pre-selected letters. Each word must include the center letter provided in the puzzle. An editor-curated list of words is selected for each daily puzzle.  

For information on how to play, select the More in the top right corner of the game and then select How to Play.

The entire Spelling Bee experience is available to New York Times Games, All Access, and Home Delivery subscribers.

Where to Play

You can play Spelling Bee in the Games app, at nytimes.com/puzzles/spelling-bee, or in the Play tab of the New York Times News app.

 
 

When to Play

New Spelling Bee puzzles are released at 3 a.m. EST every day of the week. Subscribers can play past puzzles at any time. For more information, you can review the “Spelling Bee Past Puzzles” section.

Note: A Spelling Bee puzzle is also available to play in the print edition of The New York Times Magazine. The print version of the Spelling Bee puzzle provides a different letter set and utilizes a different scoring system than the digital version of Spelling Bee. Answers for the print edition of the Spelling Bee puzzle are found in the same issue of the magazine.

 
 

Spelling Bee Statistics

Your Spelling Bee progress and statistics will automatically link to your New York Times account. Your Statistics page displays key statistics based on the puzzles you have played from August 1, 2023 and onwards.

You can select Stats in the Spelling Bee tool-bar to see:

  • Number of Puzzles played
  • Amount of words found 
  • Number of Pangrams found 
  • Highest rank you have achieved
  • Number of times you have reached Genius
  • Longest word you have found
 
 

Spelling Bee Buddy

Spelling Bee Buddy is an interactive tool available to New York Time Games, All Access, News, and Home Delivery subscribers that provides personalized hints and statistics for your daily Spelling Bee game. 

  • You can check Spelling Bee Buddy throughout the day to get personalized hints. 
  • Spelling Bee Buddy is available for web browsers at nytimes.com/sbbuddy and in the New York Times iOS and Android News apps.

Spelling Bee Forum

Spelling Bee Forum is a community forum where you can get hints from the column and commiserate with other Spelling Bee players in the comments section. 

Navigate to the Spelling Bee Forum in the apps by selecting More in the upper right hand corner while playing Spelling Bee. 

  • Select Hint from the dropdown to visit the most recent Spelling Bee Forum
  • Select Community will visit the comment section of the Forum.

Spelling Bee Past Puzzles

From the Spelling Bee Hub, you can see which puzzles are available from the current week, in addition to the week prior. 

You can also locate past puzzles in the Games app and News app by selecting the More button in the in-game Spelling Bee toolbar and selecting Past Puzzles.

  • Spelling Bee will display a hive icon once a game has started with the rank currently achieved
  • If a game has not been started, a bee icon will display
  • If you have selected Answers or Yesterday in the in-game Spelling Bee toolbar to reveal the game answers then the icon will display Revealed and your achieved rank
  • If you see a lock icon on a past puzzle, it means playing past puzzles is not included in your subscription

Spelling Bee Past Puzzle Answers

Spelling Bee puzzle answers are only available to Games, All Access, and Home Delivery subscribers.

  • Once you are ready to reveal the answers to a past puzzle, you can select Answers at the top of the Spelling Bee game board.  
  • From the current day’s puzzle, you can select Yesterday at the top of the game board  to reveal the answers to the previous day's puzzle.
  • Answers to today's puzzle will be available the following day once it becomes a past puzzle.

If you reveal the answers using the Yesterday or Answers button on a puzzle that you have not completed, it will end the game and you will not be able to make any additional word entries.
